A sequel to King of the Monsters and Kong: Skull Island, Godzilla vs. Kong is a 2021 American science fiction monster film produced by Legendary Pictures. It is the fourth installment in the MonsterVerse, after Godzilla: King of the Monsters (2019) and Apex (working title).
Legends clash in "Godzilla vs. Kong" as two mythical rivals square off in a dramatic fight for the destiny of the Earth. Kong and his guards go on a risky trip in search of his rightful home, and they are accompanied by Jia, a little orphaned girl with whom he has developed an unbreakable and profound attachment. However, they find themselves unintentionally in the way of an infuriated Godzilla, who is wreaking havoc around the globe. The epic battle between the two titans, sparked by unknown powers, is merely the beginning of the mystery that lurks deep under the Earth's core.
It has been a while after the assault, but public opinion has shifted against Godzilla. In the wake of Godzilla's recent assault on her school, Bernie's podcast listener Madison Russell is alarmed. Trying to reason with her widowed father Mark (who is working as Monarch's director) about a potential lead on the source of Godzilla's rampage, she approaches him after school but he ignores all she says as he simply answers that beasts, like humans, may evolve. With Josh Valentine at her side, Madison is on a mission to find the person responsible for Godzilla's rampage and uncover the mysteries of Apex.
Meanwhile, Apex's founder and CEO Walter Simmons enlists Nathan Lind, a former Monarch scientist turned Hollow Earth theorist, to assist them in their quest for a tremendous energy source on the Hollow Earth, a subterranean realm under the Earth and the secret home of the Titans. Nathan is cautious at first since his brother attempted to investigate the Hollow Earth, but was killed by a powerful anti-gravity barrier within the tunnel. After Walter discloses that Apex has constructed Hollow Earth Aerial Vehicles, specialized vehicles capable of withstanding the gravity field's pressure, he eventually accepts.
Since Skull Island is no longer able to contain Kong (because Kong has grown too large), Nathan travels to Skull Island and meets his colleague, Monarch anthropological linguist and Jia's adoptive mother Ilene Andrews, with his idea of using Kong as their navigator in order to lead them to the Hollow Earth. Ilene first rejects the task, but when Nathan convinces her that this is the only way to end Godzilla's rampage and locate Kong a new home, she ultimately agrees.
Kong is locked up aboard a custom-built barge with the Apex crew, led by Walter's daughter Maia. While Jia holds hands with Kong, Kong signs the word "home" for Ilene as he feels restless and worried in the middle of the night. Next morning, Ilene tells Nathan about raising Jia as her own after a series of harsh and unpredictable storms killed most of the Iwi and her parents, but Jia was the lone survivor since Kong protected her, leading to their bond."
By now, Godzilla has arrived and attacked the troops, before causing the barge to capsize and almost drowning Kong and his companions. When Nathan frees Kong by unlocking his shackles, enabling him to combat Godzilla underwater long enough for him to surface and tip the barge back on its head, he is able to save the gathering of survivors from drowning. In preparation for their showdown, Godzilla goes onboard a neighboring aircraft ship, where Kong has jumped. Godzilla and Kong trade blows until fighter aircraft divert their attention from them and Kong pushes Godzilla out to sea to finish the battle. This time around, Godzilla doesn't let Kong get away by firing his atomic breath from the copyright, but instead takes him down into the water and intends on drowning him in an attempt to get him out of there.
Because Godzilla has been startled by Kong's deep charges, their combat has been broken up.
Knowing Kong won't survive in the cold and that they won't be able to return him to Skull Island, Nathan asks Ilene if Kong will go if he thinks there are others like him down there, and she tells Jia to ask Kong about his family, prompting the Titan to enter the tunnel and the teams to follow him in their HEAVs.
Madison and Josh locate Bernie, who recognizes Madison as Mark's daughter and joins their inquiry. Inside the Apex headquarters, they discover that the "eye" Bernie had mentioned before has vanished. On accidently locking and transporting Skullcrawler eggs via an underground tube to Hong Kong, the gang accidentally locked and transferred.
There, the three disembark and find themselves in a huge dark room. They see Apex's most powerful weapon, "Mechagodzilla" which is a mechanized version of Godzilla controlled by the late Dr. Ishiro Serizawa's son and Walter's chief technology officer, Ren Serizawa, who is also his father. Mechagodzilla is put to the test as soon as the mecha is turned on. Walter unleashes a large adult Skullcrawler, codenamed "Number 10" into the room. Skullcrawler is about to attack Madison, Josh, and Bernie when it is grabbed by Mechagodzilla. Mechagodzilla uses a powerful red energy beam to cut the creature in half, allowing Madison, Josh, and Bernie to hide in a small hole in the ground. There are limits to how much power the mecha can use, so the test is cut short when the mecha shuts down right away because of them.
The next day, Kong and Nathan's crew continue their quest, finally arriving to a massive stone temple that was formerly the property of Kong's forefathers. As they explore the inside, they discover remnants of an old fight between Kong's and Godzilla's races, as well as an ancient axe crafted from the dorsal plate of a dead member of Godzilla's species, which Kong uses to sit on a massive throne. In the process of locating the power source that would allow them to augment Mechagodzilla's power supply, Nathan's crew discovers that the same power source can also be used to replenish Kong's battle axe. Maia and the Apex crew, on the other hand, utilize spider-like drones to harvest the power source and transport it back to their Hong Kong headquarters, ignoring Ilene's protests that Apex should not just grab the discovery of the century. Maia orders her bodyguards to fire their weapons towards Nathan's crew, only for Kong to violently scream at them in response to their actions. While this is going on, Mechagodzilla starts transmitting a signal to Godzilla, who is alerted to the machine's activation and immediately rushes for Hong Kong.
Kong accepts Godzilla's challenge and begins to go to Hong Kong with his axe, while Ilene, Nathan, and Jia follow in their HEAV, a hole produced by Godzilla's atomic breath. When Kong confronts Godzilla again in Hong Kong, he obtains the upper hand and shoves his axe down Godzilla's throat, stopping him from launching his atomic breath. Kong uses his axe to hurt Godzilla in the thigh, but Godzilla removes and discards the axe. Kong recovers his axe and brings it down on Godzilla, causing an explosion that pushes both Titans back, giving Nathan the impression that Kong had won the second round of the battle against Godzilla.
Walter instructs Ren to dispatch Mechagodzilla to kill Godzilla back at the Apex headquarters. Despite Ren's warnings not to use the new Hollow Earth energy source without first testing it, Walter dismisses Ren's pleas and orders the mecha to be activated. Bernie, Madison, and Josh are apprehended by security and taken to Walter for infiltrating Apex headquarters. Madison accuses Walter of inciting Godzilla to war and caused all of this, however he boldly argues that he took responsibility for allowing humanity to fight back against Godzilla and the Titans.
After waking up, Kong sees the fight between Godzilla and Mechagodzilla before encountering Jia, who attempts to persuade Kong that Godzilla isn't truly his opponent. Though Kong first does not believe her as he continues to witness Godzilla being annihilated by Mechagodzilla, Jia eventually convinces him that the robot is the "real" adversary, not Godzilla. After a brief moment of hesitation, Kong agrees and sets aside his animosity before marching into combat to assist Godzilla while repairing his dislocated arm.
As Mechagodzilla is about to fire its red energy beam into Godzilla's throat, Kong rushes atop the robot and deflects the beam into the air, so sparing Godzilla's life. Godzilla assists Kong in fighting Mechagodzilla after realizing Kong saved his life and sense an ally in him upon discovering he is not an adversary.
The two Titans join forces to turn the tide, but the robot outperforms them. Kong takes aim at Mechagodzilla with his axe, but his weapon has lost its charge, and the robot attempts to impale Kong with its tail drill, but Kong survives. Recognizing that he and the others can do nothing to help Kong and Godzilla, Bernie pulls out a flask of liquor and proposes they all drink. But, having had an epiphany, Josh snatches Bernie's flask and spills the contents all over Mechagodzilla's control panel, prompting Mechagodzilla to halt and Godzilla and Kong to reclaim the upper hand.
Monarch subsequently established an observation station in the Hollow Earth. Ilene, Nathan, and Jia observe Kong on his morning stroll one day. Kong jumps atop a cliff, pounds his chest, and roars, proclaiming himself king of the Hollow Earth and joyfully accepting it as his new home and dominion.
